The Lakes International Comic Art Festival - of which Bryan is a founding patron - on the weekend of 12 - 14 October 2018 in Kendal in the English Lake District has announced their Early Bird Passes are now available!
As part of the Beyond Words Festival, Pénélope Bagieu's graphic novel Brazen (Penguin) presents a series of portraits of 30 incredible women such as Josephine Baker, Peggy Guggenheim or Tove Jansson.
Penelope will be discussing these rebel ladies with Mary and Bryan Talbot, who revisit the life of anarchist and Communarde Louise Michel in the graphic novel The Red Virgin and the Vision of Utopia (Jonathan Cape). £5 at Institut Français 17 Queensberry Pl, Kensington, London SW7 2DT. The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is running another amazing original art auction, and advance viewing has just opened. Aiming to raise funds for LICAF and the charity OCD Action, the auction showcases original published artwork including pages and covers from Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), Dave Mc Kean (Cages), Bryan Talbot (Grandville), Glyn Dillon (The Nao of Brown), Sean Phillips (Kill or be Killed), John Higgins (Judge Dredd Unchained) and Michael Cho (Hawk and Dove), to name but a few.
The exhibition is on until the 1st September and will then tour internationally for three years. Bryan has now completely finished the 164 pages of artwork and the afterword.
This is an amazing festival: the only one in England run in the European style where the comics literally take over the whole town.
Every year they have amazing guests and a huge range of events. Bryan was a guest yesterday at the unveiling of the plaque to commemorate the opening of Sunderland's new arts centre, the completely refurbished Edwardian Fire Station in the city centre.
Titled "Venturing off the page: exploring multimedia, animation and new narrative forms" the event is chaired by comics editor and publisher John Freeman and the other guest speakers are Kate Ashwin (creator of "Widdershins"), Yomi Ayeni ("Clockwork Watch") and digital comics agent provocateur Daniel Merlin Goodbrey.
This is the first event British comics news site downthetubes has ever been a partner in organising.
